PUBG is getting a spin-off called Project Cowboy. It will be an open-world Wild West shooter that is likely inspired by a popular custom mode.
The universe of PUBG is getting bigger. The developer studio Krafton is working on a new shooter with the working title Project Cowboy. This is reported by the Korean info portal Bloter, among others. However, it will probably be quite a while before the game is released.
Unfortunately, there are no pictures or trailers for Project Cowboy yet, but some information is already available in the developer’s job advertisements. We collect what is known about the Cowboy PUBG so far.
What kind of game will Project Cowboy be?
According to the well-known PUBG insider PlayerIGN, Project Cowboy was inspired by the popular Western Custom mode, in which players compete against each other on the desert map Miramar using only weapons from the Wild West – for example revolvers and the Winchester 94.
Now it is to become a stand-alone game, complete with an open Western game world. Apparently Krafton doesn’t want to leave the Wild West cake completely to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Job descriptions on the developer’s website already reveal that the game will be released for PC and consoles and will allow crossplay. Whether exclusively PS5 and Xbox Series X are meant or whether Project Cowboy will also ride into the LastGen is not yet clear.
There is also no official release date yet, but you will probably need a lot of patience – apparently Project Cowboy is still in a very early development phase. We don’t expect the game before 2023, but of course we’re happy to be surprised.
And what about the leaked sci-fi spin-off, Project Vertical? That’s also supposed to be an open-world shooter in the PUBG universe, but with a future setting. According to PlayerIGN, Vertical is in development at PUBG Studio, a subsidiary studio of Krafton. It could also be PUBG 2.0 – or there are several spinoffs in development at the same time. We’ll stay tuned for more on this, of course!
