What a golden rabbit has to do with a new high-end graphics card and why that means disappointment

AMD must be working on a new high-end GPU

Quite abruptly, news reaches the graphics card market from China that AMD is planning a new version of the Radeon RX 7900 XT.

This is reported by the leaker wxnod, known for such advance information, on Twitter – if one can still say that about the social media platform, after all Elon Musk recently renamed it X.

AMD’s golden rabbit that only stays in China?

Back to the topic: according to the leak, this is a Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which is probably only releasing for the Chinese market, at least for the time being.

The GRE stands for the Golden Rabbit Edition, which means the Golden Rabbit Edition The naming is presumably due to the Year of the Rabbit, which is this year’s sign of the zodiac according to the Chinese calendar

The eponymous rabbit has apparently been trimmed, because the GRE version is a regular Radeon RX 7900 XT that has been trimmed in parts, as wxnod explains.

More information comes from our colleagues at (PCGamesHardware), who refer to feedback from an AMD sales representative:

A price is still missing as well as a concrete release date, but at least the latter detail is said to have been found out by the leaker momomo_us on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the leaker, the Radeon RX 7900 GRE will be released on 28 July.

As the portal (Videocardz) further reports, some changes are also noticeable in the PCB design, which in turn suggests that this is not a classic Navi-31 card.

The visible PCB has a narrower profile with a modified SMD layout. This means that the Radeon RX 7900 GRE could be the first model of a Navi 31/32 hybrid that AMD had presented as a prototype last month – you can find more details in the (Video of Moore’s Law is Dead):

This could also see AMD venture a test run of the Navi-32 generation before the mid-range graphics cards around the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are expected to be unveiled at Gamescom 2023, as (Videocardz) further reported.

The price of the new GRE variant of the Radeon RX 7900 is already speculated to be lower than the RRP of the XT model due to the lower memory.

This is 849 euros for the reference model – however, there is not supposed to be one for the Golden Rabbit Edition, rather only custom designs are in the works.

According to estimates from several sources, these should then settle between 750 and 800 euros at market launch – if the Radeon RX 7900 GRE makes it to Europe at all.

A Radeon RX 7900 with less memory – does this configuration make more sense than the XT model? What price would such a graphics card have to be to become attractive? Let us know in the comments!
