In a hands-on event, the Steam Deck in Doom Eternal is said to show in medium detail what the handheld PC can do – with pretty good results.

Valve invited PC gamers and YouTube channels like Linus Tech Tips to a hands-on event in Seattle to try out the new handheld PC Steam Deck and take a closer look at its performance.

Unfortunately, we ourselves were unable to accept the rather short notice invitation due to the Corona situation, but said Youtube channel Linus Tech Tips offers, among other things, concrete FPS values in Doom Eternal in a new video.

Steam Deck meets Doom: 60 FPS at medium details

In direct comparison with the already available handheld PC Aya Neo, Valve’s Steam Deck performs significantly better. While Aya Neo is just under 40 FPS, Steam Deck comes in at around 60 FPS. According to the video, the game ran primarily at medium details.

In the exact scene at minute 10:00, the character is standing still, but there are also battle scenes in the video embedded below that show performance at comparable levels (for example, at points 6:30 and 9:15).

Unmatched duel: RDNA 2 vs. Vega

The significantly better performance compared to the Aya Neo is not surprising, as the Steam Deck’s hardware partly relies on newer components.

– Aya Neo: Vega graphics chip (6 CUs, up to 1.5 GHz), LPDDR4x RAM

– Steam Deck: RDNA2 graphics chip (8 CUs, up to 1.6 GHz), LPDDR5-RAM

We’re very excited to see how Steam Deck performs with this hardware in other titles and how the handheld PC does in other important areas like battery life.

At the same time, Valve doesn’t have too much time left for tuning. The first orders should be possible in December 2021. However, this only applies to the very first pre-orders.

Currently, you can only register for an order on the Steam page for the Steam Deck as usual, but the order itself should only be possible “after Q2 2022”.

How do you rate the performance values of the Steam Deck in Doom Eternal? A good performance, too little for your taste or something in between? Feel free to write it in the comments!
