What’s next for Valheim? The developers are already providing a lot of information. We list the planned contents of the roadmap for you.
The survival hit Valheim didn’t expect its own success. And although updates are delayed because of this, a whole lot of new content is planned for 2022. Here we give you an overview of what exactly is coming.
Update 26 April 2022]:Valheim has sold 10 million copies, and in the wake of this happy announcement, the developers have also reconfirmed that the big Mistlands update is still scheduled for release in 2022:
Development continues on our next major content update, and fans of the survival genre can look forward to even more Valheim goodness later this year, including a brand new biome to explore, new enemies to fight and new weapons to craft.
Since the launch of Valheim, the team size has doubled, so the chances are good that this goal will be achieved.
The team’s joyful message also found its way to the fans via Twitter:
Valheim has sold over 10 million copies! Thank you to every single one of you who got us to this milestone – when we launched the game we could never in our wildest dreams have imagined this! 🧡 🍻 pic.twitter.com/ZCmcsaubPB

Update Feb 3, 2022: In the (Blogpost) on Steam, the developers stated that they are also currently working on using Valheim to ensure good compatibility with the forthcoming Steam Deck.
The Great Expansions
Originally, four major expansions in the form of four free updates were planned – all for 2021, but by April it became apparent that the plans were too ambitious and impractical for Iron Gate’s small indie studio.
After the release of Hearth & Home, the makers therefore focused on smaller and more frequent patches, while at the same time tweaking the next big update: Mistlands.
Here you will find a new world boss as well as other smaller enemies and previously unknown resources. It is also only the first completely new area. In the end, nine regions should be available, five of which are already finished in the game.
Update from 3 February 2022: The development of the Mistlands should now really take off. The developers have already agreed on the basic elements and enemy types. And they shared a concept image on Steam of one of the flying enemies of the Mistlands, which brings back memories of the death gnats from the plains:
Mistlands
Behind this update is a completely new biome: The Mistlands. Strictly speaking, they are already in the game, but so far they offer almost no content. This will change in the future. At irregular intervals, there are small glimpses of the Mistlands, where the terrain is apparently often treacherous and rocky:
Here you will find a new world boss as well as other smaller enemies, as well as previously unknown resources. It is also only the first completely new area. In the end, nine regions should be available, five of which are already finished in the game.
Cult of the Wolves
This update expands the world building itself. You should find interesting places more often and the battles themselves will also be expanded. There will also be side quests, in the course of which you will come across the cult of the wolves that gives the game its name.
Ships and Sea
The name says it all: ships and seafaring will be expanded. Among other things, features such as decorating your boats with colourful shields are coming. In addition, you should be able to discover much more during your journeys on the high seas.
Features without date & Biom updates
While the aforementioned addons are considered certain, there is still a list of features that the developer wants to do, but at the same time are still in limbo and accordingly do not have a release date:
- Multiplayer Interactions
- combat enhancements
- Moon Phases
- Expansion of the trader inventory
- Svartalfr Brigands
- More unique places
- Sandbox Mode
- Munin (another raven besides Hugin)
Great details are not yet available on these planned changes. However, Iron Gate also plans to further develop the existing biomes and add new locations, enemies and items. For example, a new type of monster has been spotted in the swamps.
And the plains got a completely new source of raw materials with many recipes with the tar pits.
The mountain regions are next: In the high peaks there will soon be caves and dungeons, as we know them from the Bleak Forest. Some screenshots already show what these will look like:
Update from February 3, 2022: In the blog post on Steam, Iron Gate stated that the mountain caves are almost completely developed. To mark the occasion, they showed two more images from the gloomy mountain caves, which also come with man-made vaults:
What is to come later?
Ashlands: Although the developer himself has not yet commented on this, the Ashlands are another potential candidate for an update. By the way, this is what the Ashlands look like so far:
You can already mine resources here, but you can’t use them yet. It would only be logical if an upcoming update adds more content here.
