No, CD Projekt Red will not be bought by Sony. The developer studio behind games like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 speaks out clearly about the rumours.

CD Projekt Red will remain independent. This was stated by CEO Adam Kicinski in the course of the (recent investor conference). Previously, there had been rumours for months that the development studio behind games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 could be acquired by Sony.

However, this is – obviously – not the case. According to Kicinski  CD Projekt Red is not for sale. We want to remain independent. We have an excellent strategy, at least in my eyes, which is not easy to execute, but all the more exciting to follow this plan.

The rumours that Sony might take over CD Projekt Red came up in March 2023, but without any kind of evidence (via VGC). And even in previous years, there was always speculation that CD Projekt Red would become part of a larger company.

The constantly ongoing race between the big three – Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo – is probably decisive for this. Sony and Microsoft in particular have repeatedly swallowed up and absorbed developer studios – for example, Bethesda now belongs to Microsoft and Bungie to Sony. Currently, the takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft is planned.

What else is happening at CD PR

In the same investor conference, by the way, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was able to reach a new milestone: With a total of 50 million units sold the role-playing game qualifies for the top 10 best-selling games of all time

In addition, in June 2023 we are finally to learn more about Phantom Liberty – the first and only story expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 How this will be followed by new Witcher games has long been known.

So we have certainty that Sony is not currently to take over CD Projekt Red – what do you think of the latest development regarding the persistent rumours that have persisted in recent weeks?
