After ten successful years, Warframe is getting a fantasy spin-off with a focus on massive melee battles. What we know about Soulframe so far, you can read in our article.

This past weekend, TennoCon was a dedicated trade show all about the MMO perennial Warframe. A freshly announced MMORPG from developers Digital Extremes stole the show from all other news.

With Soulframe, Warframe is getting a fantasy spin-off after almost ten successful years – we tell you what is known about it so far.

What you can expect in the new fantasy MMO Soulframe

Melee combat instead of gunfights: While Warframe is a fast-paced shooter set in a sci-fi universe, Soulframe is a fantasy MMO with a focus on melee combat. So it”s not a true sequel, but rather a spin-off set in a different setting.

In an interview with the (Washington Post), game director Steve Sinclair revealed the first details:

While Warframe focuses on shooting, this is all about melee combat. And while Warframe is super fast and insanely fast-paced, here it”s going to be much slower and heavier. But it still has a lot of similarities to the genre we have experience in

The inspiration behind Soulframe: At first glance, Soulframe looks a lot like Elden Ring, but Sinclair says the inspiration for the game world comes from Studio Ghibli films like Princess Mononoke and the fantasy classic The Neverending Story.

This is what the first trailer shows
: If you watch the reveal trailer, you will quickly understand what is meant by this:

Focus on open world and exploration of it: Soulframe will also have a large open world hub that will serve as the overworld. Sinclair added that the team wants to put a much bigger focus on exploration. Not much else is currently known about the new project, however.

Still early in development, but still playable soon? If you think that this all still sounds very vague, you are of course right. Even if it”s not necessarily obvious from the trailer, Soulframe is still in a very early stage of development. But the team hopes to present the first playable version to their fans within a year.

You don”t have to fear for the future of Warframe: Even though Game Director Steve Sinclair has switched to the new project, the currently fifth most successful MMO will be provided with free updates and expansions as usual. The next add-on, Duviri Paradox, will be released in the fourth quarter.

Did you know that Warframe was once planned as a competitor to Unreal Tournament?
