There’s a new gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Wukong that shows the switch to Unreal Engine 5 – and much more.

Exactly twelve months ago, the Chinese developer Game Science caused a stir with a first trailer for the game Black Myth: Wukong: The action adventure simply looked damn good and promising.

Since then, the developers have continued to work diligently on their vision of a game based on the Chinese folk novel Journey to the West. In a new gameplay trailer over twelve minutes long, the developers present the current state of play, which features a major innovation: Black Myth: Wukong is being made with the help of Unreal Engine 5.

Graphically still impressive

Naturally, it’s also the first thing that catches your eye in the new gameplay trailer: visually, Black Myth still cuts an enormously good figure. Crisp textures meet an art style that is appropriately dedicated to Chinese mythology. In addition, there are fancy effects and a beautiful snow that has only rarely been seen in video games.

In addition to the snow flurry, the trailer also shows glimpses of other areas towards the end, which are just as visually exciting: A battle in a swamp, the inside of a temple, various mountainous regions and more.

In addition to the Unreal Engine 5, Black Myth: Wukong also relies on a partnership with Nvidia regarding DLSS. The action adventure will thus fully support the technology at release.

More than just fancy graphics

Black Myth: Wukong, however, is not just a pure tech demo that wants to shine with a particularly varied scenario. Instead, the gameplay is also supposed to offer a lot, whereby the developers focus primarily on the combat system in the new trailer – no wonder in view of two detailed boss fights.

In both fights, once against another monkey fighter, the other time against a giant thunder dragon, the action adventure presents itself with a fluid combat system. Light and heavy attacks alternate with constant dodging, because the opponents also have a lot going for them.

In addition, there are special abilities, of which there will be 72 in the finished game. Only a few of them can be seen in the gameplay trailer:

– a protective circle that creates a ring of fire around you and apparently blocks at least one enemy attack

– various -enhanced attacks that, among other things, ignite your battle staff

– when fighting the dragon, Wukong jumps on his extended staff and dodges attacks

It is not very clear from the material how exactly these skills can be triggered. However, in the interface at the bottom right there is an indicator with three dots, which apparently charges up when you dodge perfectly. As soon as the player makes a combo attack or is hit, the points expire.

When is the release?

Those who have tasted blood after the fresh game scenes will have to be patient for quite some time. There is no fixed release date for Black Myth: Wukong yet. It will probably not be ready until 2023, if not even later.

Now it’s up to you: Did the gameplay video whet your appetite for Black Myth: Wukong and its scenario or do you remain sceptical in view of the apparently still inexperienced studio? Write us your opinion in the comments
