(Without soul and humor): Movie reviews are rarely as scathing as the Borderlands movie

The Borderlands film is punished harshly by critics for its soulless production and uninspired realization

Borderlandsactually had all the trump cards in its hand to score on the big screen too. The mixture of quirky characters like Tiny Tina and Claptrap, a crazy story and plenty of black humor made the game a cult classic.

However, the film adaptation that has now been released falls far short of expectations

Instead of wit and heart, there is soulless action and uninspired copies of successful films, which prompted the critics to mercilessly slate the movie.

Borderlands is punished with disastrous reviews

The first reactions already gave us an idea that a huge flop was waiting for us. Now that the embargo on reviews has been lifted, we can see just how bad the movie really is:

  • At Metacritic, Borderlands has a Metascore of 29 rating points.
  • On Rotten Tomatoes, things look even gloomier: only 6 percent of critics recommend watching the movie.

The critics are not afraid to express their disappointment with the movie in ruthless clarity. From annoying characters and soulless staging to uninspired copycats – the verdicts are devastating

It’s loud and annoying and Jack Black’s robot Claptrap is the most annoying space character since Jar Jar Binks. Borderlands borders on awful

What we get with the movie is a noisy, insufferable and embarrassing video game adaptation that can be seen as another example of studios treating their audience like stupid cardboard cutouts.

Despite a high-caliber cast, solid visuals and an IP that offers a lot of potential, Borderlands is an example of what not to do when it comes to shooting a blockbuster.

A kind of generic “Guardians of the Galaxy” knock-off, except it’s set in a wasteland and has no soul, no humor and no imagination.

The movie didn’t capture the essence of the Borderlands video game. The dialog was chaotic and all over the place. The action scenes were not impressive. A missed opportunity to not explore and tell the story of Lilith’s origin from the game.

In addition to the harsh criticism, there are also a few positive voices: Julian Roman (MovieWeb), for example, highlights Cate Blanchett’s performance as Lilith and promises that fans of the shooter will get their money’s worth – if they get involved:

Cate Blanchett leads an all-star cast in the film adaptation of the Borderlands video game series that will satisfy open-minded fans and predictably be panned by discerning critics. The beloved first-person shooter and its players will not be disappointed.
