Despite extremely high player numbers, the free-to-play shooter XDefiant struggled with a few problems. These are to be fixed with the new patch

In the test phases of XDefiant, Ubisoft has already been able to record some successes and, above all, a lot of positive feedback. This triumph reached a new peak with the release on May 21, 2024. However, not everything was rosy and the launch was marred by a few technical problems.

In the first few hours, there were numerous server problems. Fortunately, these were resolved within the first day, but some players also complained about other problems such as annoying bugs. These are now to be addressed with the first update.

The patch notes at a glance

Game modes

  • When players want to enter the training room, they should no longer accidentally end up outside the game world.

devices

  • If players died while using a device, they could no longer throw it afterwards. This issue has been fixed.

Netcode

  • Fixed a bug where an enemy’s health meter would display incorrectly after you were killed by them.

Localization

  • Arabic characters are no longer misaligned in the user interface after a match has ended.

Miscellaneous

  • The practice room has been reopened, but unforeseen errors may still occur.
  • A bug has been fixed that caused low frame rates on some AMD GPUs.

Traumatic player numbers

Insider Gaming, the website of industry insider Tom Henderson, claims to have learned that XDefiant had more than one million different users just 2.5 hours after its release. After 48 hours, it is said to have even exceeded three million

These figures have not yet been officially confirmed, but Insider Gaming has proven to be a reliable source of unconfirmed information in the past.

Also a financial success? It should not be forgotten that XDefiant is a free-to-play title and Ubisoft only earns money when players purchase cosmetic content or the Season Pass. Users who only want to try out the shooter for a short time will therefore not bring Ubisoft a bulging wallet. How lucrative the CoD rival really is therefore remains to be seen.

While XDefiant was even referred to as the CoD killer at times, Activision has now struck back with the announcement of Black Ops 6. All known information can be found in the box above. You can also find out which shooters are currently on thin ice and which are celebrating a big comeback after many years.
