Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom won’t get DLC and the reasoning is unique in the industry

What would be natural for one of the most successful games of 2023? DLCs! But Nintendo has a very different opinion on this with the latest Zelda.

With Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo managed to do something few do: they surpassed their own mega-success with one of the best games of all time – by somehow creating an even better experience.

What would be the logical step to take advantage of this? I’m sure many of you will immediately say: expansions, DLCs, more content to sell.

But no, that’s not going to happen. There will be no DLCs, unlike the predecessor, as leading developers of the latest series installment emphasise in an interview with Famitsu. The reasoning reveals how much heart and soul the creators have invested in the title during its development

The perfect hero sandbox?

Why isn’t Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom getting any DLCs? The answer is as simple, as honest, as it is simple. The game is simply finished from the point of view of its developers.

We feel we’ve done everything we can to create gameplay opportunities in this world.

Eiji Aonuma,

And (Zelda director Hidemaro Fujibayashi thanks) the fans and looks to the future:

We are very grateful for the large number of customers who play Tears of the Kingdom for so long and deeply. We will do our best to make the next part even more fun.

(They will surely have new adventures, Link and Zelda. Only when, how and where, that is still completely open today).

A new Zelda? When is it coming? It should come as little surprise to hear that behind the scenes at Nintendo, thoughts are already turning to the next instalment in the series. However, the rejection of any form of DLC perhaps puts a tighter schedule in prospect, but no one should expect new adventures in Hyrule too soon, as Eiji Aonuma classifies:

The primary reason for developing a sequel [to Breath of the Wild] was our belief that it was worth experiencing new ways of playing Hyrule. Once that’s back, we may return to the same world – either in the form of a sequel or a whole new work. I think it’s going to be a whole new gaming experience and I hope you guys are looking forward to it.

In short: We must or may expect major innovations to be shown to us at some point in the future – then surely for a Switch 2

We show you lots of little exciting details in the latest Zelda world in the video above. Maybe you’ll find out one or two secrets of this great playground that you’ve been missing for months.

And? Surprised? Did you expect DLCs for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? Or do you find the latest Zelda world to be finished and sufficient in terms of scope and depth (and height)? Or do you, in contrast to Nintendo, perhaps even have feasible ideas for expansions at first glance? Feel free to write us your ideas and thoughts on the subject in the comments!
