(A huge step) – Fan project in GTA Online gets unexpected backing from Rockstar

After Rockstar hasn’t always been friendly with mods, the GTA developer now wants to work with the team behind the largest roleplay community.

In recent years, roleplaying in GTA 5 has become increasingly popular. So popular, in fact, that you can’t miss it on Twitch and the like. So popular, in fact, that Rockstar itself is getting in on the trend and is now working with a well-known roleplay server team.

How does roleplaying work in GTA 5?

Those who already know the answer to this question can safely skip to the next chapter. For the rest of you, we recommend you stay tuned.

With roleplay, not to be confused with role-playing as a genre, you slip into the role of a fictional character and experience adventures as this person in the game world of Los Santos. In the process, you interact with other players who do the same with their characters.

Most of the time there are predefined rules that must be followed. For example, killing is not allowed. Those who do not abide by them must expect to be banned.

A small step for mankind, but a huge one for the GTA community

GTA developer Rockstar Games has announced that they will now be working with Cfx.re, the team behind the two GTA 5 roleplay communities FiveM and RedM. Rockstar wrote about this on (their website):

Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community has found new ways to expand Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 partly through roleplay servers.

By working with Cfx.re, we will help find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the service they provide to their devs and gamers. We look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks and months.

The Cfx.re team is similarly positive about the collaboration in (their forum):

This is a huge step for the growth of our community and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games and expand the FiveM platform.

While our day to day operations won’t have a noticeable difference, with Rockstar’s help we will be improving our platform and we are very excited to see what this means for our community and creators.

Not always a rosy connection

On the one hand, the collaboration comes as a great surprise, as it was only in 2015 that the team behind the FiveM mod was banned for being an unauthorised, alternative multiplayer service that contained code that facilitated piracy.

On the other hand, the collaboration can also be seen as a continuation of this practice, because Rockstar now wants to include its own roleplay features in GTA 6. Since roleplay servers cannot be completely prevented anyway, they prefer to get their own piece of the pie in time.

Are you happy about the official support from Rockstar Games or do you fear that the servers could be restricted by it? What features would you like to see? We’re very interested in your opinion, so feel free to post it in the comments!
