Bad news for Rockstar fans: the studio has reportedly walked away from remaster plans for Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4.

Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 will probably not get a remaster after all. At least that’s what an established Rockstar insider wants to know. The disappointing remakes of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas could be to blame – and how the Definitive Edition was received by critics and fans alike. We give you all the info.

Why GTA 4 and Red Dead might not return

Not a Red Dead remaster, though? Until now, neither developer Rockstar Games nor publisher Take-Two had officially confirmed plans for remakes of Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4. The best indication that both games should return as remasters is said to have come to the attention of the usually very well-informed website (Kotaku) in August 2021.

In addition, other gaming industry insiders and even the actions of Take-Two themselves support the conjecture – an announcement of the GTA 4 and Red Dead Remaster seemed merely a matter of time.

By all accounts, fans should no longer expect a return of Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4. Supposedly there were indeed plans for this, but in the meantime they have probably been scrapped. The Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and the reactions to it are said to be to blame for this.

What exactly went wrong with GTA Trilogy: Fans and critics alike were disappointed with the state and quality of the game collection, and we too called the release Rockstar’s biggest embarrassment in our review. The launch was overshadowed by serious technical problems, sales were stopped in the meantime and the trilogy was even removed from players’ libraries. Accordingly, the Definitive Edition came off badly in international reviews and user ratings.

Where did the info come from? The fact that GTA 4 and Red Dead Remaster are not coming after all is revealed by the established Rockstar insider (Tez2). The Twitter user is known for his reliable info and insights behind the scenes of Rockstar Games and is considered one of the most credible sources regarding the GTA and Red Dead developer. His predictions and theories usually hit the mark, which is why we consider his information to be credible.

Update from 6 July 2022: The (website Kotaku) now wants to have learned from its own sources the same information about the allegedly planned remasters of Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 and thus confirms Tez2’s post. According to this, Rockstar is currently said to be concentrating exclusively on the development of GTA 6 – more on this below – while the possibility of returning to remakes of old games at some point is not ruled out. Should it really come to that, however, it will probably be several years before that happens.

Were the remasters even in development
? According to Tez2, the alleged remakes of GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption were not even in development. Rockstar is said to have made plans for the return of the brands years ago and ultimately made the implementation of them dependent on the GTA Trilogy. However, due to the problems already listed, the GTA 4 and Red Dead Remaster probably didn’t get the green light in the end.

What does the future hold for Rockstar?

At the moment GTA 6 is in development at Rockstar – the game studio has already officially let this slip. However, there is currently no concrete information, screenshots or even a trailer. Of course, there are leaks and rumours about the next Grand Theft Auto without end. You can read about which ones we consider trustworthy or even true in our GTA 6 rumour collection.

One thing is certain: we definitely shouldn’t expect GTA 6 before 2024 to 2025. The summer update 2022 for GTA Online, on the other hand, should be much earlier.

What do you think about the report of an alleged stop of the GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remaster: Would you have been happy about a return of both games? Or after the GTA Trilogy, can you do without them with a clear conscience? Let us know in the comments!
