2022 GTA 5 is to be revamped for the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X. We give you all the info on the release, gameplay and trailers of Expanded and Enhanced.
GTA 5 can’t be killed: More than eight years after its original release, Rockstar Games is giving the game a new version. Expanded and Enhanced is being released explicitly for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but should also bring exciting new features for the PC.
To give you an overview of what exactly GTA 5 E&E is all about and what will change for GTA Online, we have summarised all the important information for you here. On the other hand, if you want to know what Rockstar is planning for the (distant) future, you can find all the important leaks and rumours about GTA 6 in the following article:

Release: When will GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced be released?
GTA Expanded and Enhanced is scheduled for release in March 2022 according to official information. Originally, the release was planned for 11 November 2021. However, the release was postponed during last year’s Playstation Showcase.
Rumours of another postponement: According to the Brazilian leaker and dataminer (Matheusrb), the release of E&E could be delayed again. Allegedly, the development is complicated, which is why the new edition of GTA 5 will not be released until April or May. However, you should take this unconfirmed rumour with a grain of salt.
Platforms: For what will GTA 5 E&E be released?
Expanded and Enhanced are primarily NextGen re-releases of GTA 5 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. But the PC version should also benefit from the improvements and new features that E&E brings with it. The latter should then probably take place via an update for the PC.
Price: How much does GTA 5 E&E cost?
At the moment it is not known how much GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced will cost. But we firmly expect Rockstar to charge at least another 60 euros for the NextGen version. For example, GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was also sold at full price.
Free NextGen upgrade? At the moment, there are only rumours that owners of GTA 5 for PS4 and Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the NextGen version at no extra cost. However, the assumption would be obvious that Rockstar is doing the same to other video game developers.
We also do not assume that the upgrade or update for the PC version is connected with additional costs. However, you should also wait for official information on this matter.
New features: What kind of content will the NextGen version bring?
You can find all known details about the improvements and new features in the following list. This is what GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced will bring:
- 4K and 60fps
- faster load times thanks to SSDs
- new weapons, vehicles and activities
- Performance enhancements for selected vehicles
- enhanced wildlife, new vegetation system and denser traffic
- improved damage and weather effects
- GTA Online: What’s changing in multiplayer
- GTA Online will be standalone: With the release of GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced, GTA Online is to be decoupled as a standalone version. This means that the multiplayer of the game will be separately playable or purchasable in the future – not unlike the standalone version of Red Dead Online.
Likely no Free2Play planned: PS5 owners will be able to play GTA Online for free for the first three months after release. This suggests that GTA Online will cost something as a standalone version – just as it is already the case with the decoupled Red Dead Online.Character Transfer: Can I transfer my score?
If and how it will be possible to transfer your GTA Online character from the OldGen to the NextGen consoles is currently unknown. As soon as there is new information about this, we will of course update this article.
Trailer: What to watch for the NextGen version?
So far, there is a single trailer with gameplay for GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced, which was released by Rockstar for the PlayStation Showcase 2021. However, this trailer has come under massive criticism among fans – and for various reasons.
This is what the community criticises: Among other things, fans complain that the graphics of the NextGen version of the game hardly differ at all from current versions. There are hardly any improvements to be seen, and the overall information remains very scanty and vague. Instead of concrete details, players are only put off with so much more.
GTA 5: New trailer for the NextGen version causes a lot of criticism
In light of the disastrous launch of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and the barely existing communication on the part of Rockstar Games, the mood of the community regarding this topic has hardly improved. It remains to be seen whether GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced can ultimately live up to the community’s expectations.
