A former Rockstar employee explains why, in his experience, a PC version of GTA 6 will be a long time coming

GTA 6 will continue an old tradition at Rockstar: A PC version will only appear some time after the release for consoles. The very first Grand Theft Auto was released in 1997 for the home computer first and only then for the PlayStation, but since GTA 3 it has been an unbroken law: first the console, then the PC.

Mike York now explains what’s behind this. The former Rockstar developer knows the studio inside out and worked on GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, among others – both games that also only received a PC version some time after launch.

Is there already a PC version of GTA 6?

The first reason Mike York gives on his YouTube channel should come as no surprise to many of you: better sales According to York, Rockstar’s primary focus is on what sells At the time, GTA 5 was optimized for the PlayStation 3 at most, as the popular Sony console simply offered the biggest initial buyer base.

Most of the time, especially in the past, the PlayStation was the best seller. […] For example, when I was working on GTA 5, we focused on the PS3 and the Xbox, but we pushed the PS3 in particular to the limit.

The version for the Xbox 360 was also being worked on at the same time. And the PC version? Mike York makes an interesting statement here: The PC version is in the background, as the basis for the two console versions. There is always a PC version of the game.

Whether this also applies to GTA 6, however, cannot be deduced from this. After all, Mike York no longer works at Rockstar and the internal processes may have changed in the meantime.

High quality standards for PC version

The second main reason for the delayed PC release at Rockstar is said to be a very high quality standard . The ex-developer explains:

One of the main reasons why a PC port takes so long to come out after the game’s release is that the developers want to make it as good as possible. They have to work out all these little bugs that they haven’t worked on.

In addition, the PC also offers new creative possibilities that developers want to exploit. Mike York is referring to the significantly higher performance of the home computer  compared to the consoles, which invites you to display more characters or increase the quality of the 3D objects, for example.

How long would you be okay with having to wait for a PC version of GTA 6? A month? Half a year? A year? Or will you not be able to wait for this game anyway and buy it immediately for the console?
