There is frustration in the GTA Online community right now. Because of GTA+ some players are calling for a boycott and protest against Rockstar’s new subscription model.

In the community of GTA Online (once again) the house is in a bad way. The reason for this is the new subscription service GTA+, which is currently exclusively available on NextGen consoles. On (Reddit) players are calling on all fans to boycott GTA Online for a certain period of time. We tell you what this is all about.

Why GTA players are messing with Rockstar

What exactly is the problem? GTA+ launched on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 29 March 2022. Users of old consoles and PC players will have to do without the new subscription model. The cost of GTA+ is about six euros per month, the service can be cancelled at any time.

GTA+ subscribers receive 500,000 GTA dollars per month on their in-game account and can look forward to further bonuses. For example, access to certain content before all other players or free real estate, upgrades, clothes and certain bonuses. There are also discounts on the paid Shark Cards, which can be used to purchase in-game cash for real money.
However,

GTA+ is causing a lot of criticism among many GTA Online players. Some members of the community fear that it will lead to a long-term split in the player community. They are also worried that the payment barrier will take on larger proportions at some point. Specifically, that, for example, the subscription is necessary for essential content and that GTA Online will slowly but surely be pushed in the direction of Pay2Win.

GTA+: Rockstar’s subscription service is more dangerous than you think

This is how the fans react: That’s why some GTA Online players are now calling for a boycott. With a temporary action they want to let Rockstar know that they don’t agree with the way GTA+ is going. On Reddit, for example, they are calling for GTA Online not to be played on all platforms from 4 to 10 April.

The corresponding post has received almost 20,000 upvotes since 31 March 2022 and a lot of support in the comments. However, there is no consensus as to whether this endeavour will actually be crowned with success.

Players are not exactly optimistic: Numerous users complain in the comments that the venture is unlikely to bear fruit. Among other things, they argue that a small drop in player numbers in such a short period of time would simply not bother developers Rockstar and publishers Take-Two. The alternative suggested by numerous players is simple: don’t buy GTA+.

Not the first protest against Rockstar: In recent weeks and months Rockstar has not exactly covered itself with glory. For example, the disastrous launch of the GTA Trilogy caused a lot of criticism and the NextGen release of GTA 5 also fell short of the expectations of many players.

But the biggest outcry was also caused by the fact that the Red Dead Online community feels left out in the cold. Compared to GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer received far fewer updates with more manageable content. And things don’t look too bright for the future of the Western epic either.

The result was the SaveRedDeadOnline campaign, in the course of which numerous fans and also influencers from the scene campaigned for support for the game. Rockstar has not commented on this to date and only tried to smooth the waters with the official announcement of the next Grand Theft Auto.

What do you think about GTA+ and the boycott action of the Reddit community? How do you think fans, as well as Rockstar, should handle the issue? Let us know in the comments!
