San Andreas in GTA 5: Fans pursue an almost insane open-world plan for 2022

The game world of GTA 5 already has an impressive size. But for some fans, that”s not enough! An exciting mod project wants to add “missing” areas from San Andreas.

You think the map of GTA 5 is too small? After almost nine years, you may have had enough of the detailed and immersive game world of the Rockstar game. After all, only GTA Online got an official expansion of the map with Cayo Perico – fans of the story campaign have been left empty-handed so far.

In that case, you might be interested in the Las Venturas Project mod. A team of modders has taken on the task of adding missing areas from San Andreas to the map of GTA 5. Both games use the same setting, but GTA 5 did without a few well-known places from its predecessor and focused on other areas.

The Las Venturas Project is supposed to change that – and even offer a first playable version of the Las Vegas-inspired city by the end of 2022. We summarise the most important information about the mod for you and what the team behind it has planned for when.

What exactly is the GTA 5 mod supposed to offer?

The Las Venturas Project has recently published an (official Patreon page)  Fans can support the modder team there and are regularly provided with updates on information and new playable versions. The team consists of several hobby developers under the leadership of a user named Antasurris. The main goal of the mod: to make the areas Las Venturas and Bone County playable in GTA 5.

In GTA: San Andreas, Las Venturas was a fictional version of the city of sin Las Vegas, which turns out to be smaller than Los Santos and larger than San Fierro. Bone County, on the other hand, is a huge desert area where, among other things, a secret military installation and the infamous Little Probe”Inn café can be found.

(Las Venturas played a central role in the story of San Andreas, but in GTA 5 the Rockstars version of the real Las Vegas cannot be found).

The Las Venturas Project has been in development for several months, according to the modders” official Patreon page. Currently, a fraction of the mod is already playable for Patreon supporters. Players can access locations such as El Castillo del Diablo, Heatstroke Highway, Historic Route 69, the Hotel Melasuda and several streets in between. In total, this fraction covers about 3 km².

For the final version of the mod, however, they have set their sights on much more: Ultimately, Antasurris and Co. are aiming to almost double the size of the original map of GTA 5. The Las Venturas Project should thus cover almost 70 km² and a first version of the titular city should be playable by the end of 2022 – at least for Patreon supporters.

Of course, development will continue in 2023, but there is no final release date. The Antasurris team will also make the mod available for free download. However, only when the project has progressed far enough – a concrete date is not mentioned at the moment.

What do Rockstar and Take-Two have to say about this?

At the moment it remains questionable whether Antasurris and Co. will even get the chance to finalise the planned mod or share it with the public. After all, developer Rockstar and publisher Take-Two have not exactly made themselves popular with their treatment of the modding community in recent months.

Numerous mods have been blocked and removed from circulation by Take-Two, and in some cases their developers have even been sued. Before the release of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, it was mainly mods for GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas that were targeted – but not exclusively.

Accordingly, there is always a risk that Project Las Venturas will never see the light of day and that the areas from San Andreas will not make it to GTA 5.

What do you think about the Las Venturas Project: Would you be happy to be able to play old familiar areas from San Andreas at some point? Or do you doubt that the ambitious project will ever be finished? Let us know in the comments!
