One of Riot’s oldest champions is to receive a visual and gameplay update in 2022. Now there are first details.
Udyr was one of the first champions that League of Legends added in 2009 after the release of the champion pool. Now, 13 years later, the shaman is finally to get a complete rework, including a graphics update and revised abilities.
The decision to rework and update Uydr was made in February this year in response to popular demand from the community. Since then, its popularity ratings have risen massively in both solo queue and professional play. Udyr works well with the new mythic items and is also perfect for the current META of Season 11.
How the Spirit Walker will stand after his VGU is still unclear. However, there are already drafts that give us a first impression of his rework.
The new “better” Udyr
Riot’s developers recently released details on the progress of Udyr’s upcoming VGU. In his blog post, Riot’s gameplay designer, Stash “Stashu” Chelluck, explained that Udyr’s unique selling point as an ultiless melee fighter, will be preserved. Instead, the VGU will focus on providing more gameplay variety that will give players unique moments and great gameplay. Furthermore, Udyr’s visual appearance will be adapted to the most modern League of Legends standards and his backstory will be more closely interwoven with Freljord lore.
Also mentioned was a “super stance” that will be added to his kit. According to Stashu, his team has been toying with the idea of granting Udyr boosted stances instead of his Ulitmates under certain conditions, for example after a long period of non-use or in conjunction with a cooldown. This could also make stances that are little used more interesting again.

The development team made it clear that they are still in the early stages of revising Udyr and therefore things can still change. We can therefore look forward to further information and changes in the coming months.
