Minecraft becomes a full-fledged RPG, with skill trees, classes, dice and D&D rulebook. We explain everything important about the big DLC Dungeons & Dragons.

Minecraft is becoming a fantasy role-playing game. And that doesn”t just mean magical new environments or skins: The DLC Dungeons & Dragons brings much, much more! We”ll tell you what”s inside and when you can set off on your adventure.

What is Minecraft Dungeons & Dragons?

Although it is officially called DLC, it is actually a bona fide conversion of the base game. Minecraft D&D has its own UI and lots of brand new features that allow you to fully immerse yourself in the Forgotten Realms – this time with a brick look. You can admire them right here in the trailer:

The Forgotten Realms in a Million Blocks

What exactly is inside? A huge load of Dungeons & Dragons, of course. You choose one of four classes (such as wizard or barbarian), all of which use different skills and equipment. In the roughly ten-hour story campaign, you then travel alone or in co-op with friends through five well-known D&D regions such as Icewind Dale, experiencing adventures and fighting battles.

The world is not completely open, but it should leave plenty of room for exploration. You visit places one by one in successive chapters of the story.

You”ll meet lots of creatures you know from the pen&paper template, such as the Shifter Beast, Mimics, Gall-like cubes, Mindflayers, Goblins, Tieflings, Dragons and so on. You can select your class skills, such as spells or attacks, via the quick bar, where you usually carry around tools and building materials.

But it”s not all fighting Of course, a real round of D&D also includes dialogues with skill checks! For example, you can try to intimidate a goblin instead of attacking it. To do this, you roll samples on your stats and cross your fingers for yourself, just like in the original. These dialogues are all set to music – another innovation that has never been seen before in any other Minecraft DLC.

One more note on co-op: The developers made it clear in a pre-launch presentation that Minecraft D&D is designed as a solo experience. Co-op works, but the story is more geared towards you experiencing it alone.

When and where will Minecraft D&D be released? The DLC will be released sometime in spring 2023, so probably in April at the latest. We will of course let you know as soon as the release date is set! As usual, you can download the DLC directly via the Minecraft Marketplace.
The developers have not yet given us a price, but for comparison: The Minecraft Dungeons spinoff (without Dragons) currently costs 20 euros. We suspect a similar price range for Minecraft Dungeons & Dragons.

Can you use the new blocks and items in Minecraft itself? No, you cannot. The only content that can be transferred to the base game are the character skins. So you can run around in Minecraft as a D&D wizard or barbarian in the future.
