Server full in New World? Soon you’ll be able to switch worlds for free (but only once) to play together with your friends.
Update from 16 October 2021: If you’re waiting to finally be able to transfer your character, you’ll have to be a little more patient. Because once again the developers have postponed the feature – this time to an unspecified date in the coming week from 18 to 24 October 2021. This was announced in the official forum
The reason: The work was completed and the process was tested on the internal servers. However, they did not want to start distributing the update on a weekend, as this would also involve maintenance work and the servers would have to go offline. Since many players want to use their free time at the weekend to make progress in New World, the decision was made to postpone the update.
Making the server transfers available at the weekend could even trigger balancing problems: After all, guild wars currently in progress could be strongly influenced by the changing number of players. More information about the transfers will follow.
Update from 10 October 2021: The promised character transfers are delayed even further due to irregularities during testing. Amazon currently expects the feature to be available sometime next week (i.e. from 11 October). At least we now have exact information on how the move of your character is supposed to work, which we have of course added to this overview.
Original message: MMOs are mainly there to be played together with friends. All the more annoying that the completely overcrowded servers of New World currently make it impossible to choose your favourite server. Only a few of the currently available German servers even allow new characters. But there is to be a remedy.
The developers promise a free character transfer. This means: You can choose a server now that will accept you without a queue in order to be able to play at all, and later move with your character to another server for free in order to join your friends in the same world. We have summarised all known information about the server change for you in a clear overview.
When is the free character transfer coming?
The character transfer was announced on 1 October 2021 via Twitter There, the developers promised that the feature was a “top priority” for them and they plan to make it live next week. According to this, the free character transfer should ideally be available by October 10.

With the current patch 1.0.1, the button “Change World” has already made it into the main menu and “World Transfer” into the shop. However, the function has not yet been activated. In the patch notes, the developers say:
We’ve laid the groundwork for the upcoming character transfer service and implemented it in-game, so you may already see elements of our preparations in the in-game shop. We are continuing to finalise this feature and will give you more information on how it works later this week (when we are ready to release the feature).
What are the rules for character transfer?
In the official New World Forum Amazon has answered the most frequently asked questions. This important information is contained in it:
How do I change the server?
- To change the server, you have to log in with the character – so also go through the queue again.
- In the in-game shop you will find a new tab where you can pick up a free transfer token.
- In order for the transfer to work, you must fulfil several requirements: You must leave your Company, be in a safe location such as a Settlement, and remove all active Trade Orders.
Can I keep items and levels during server transfer?
According to Amazon, you will keep almost everything that belongs to your character: level progress, title, faction progress, inventory, stock, money, completed and started quests and houses including decoration.
However, you will lose your friends list, your membership in a company and all trade orders.
Is it important which world set you have selected?
According to the developers, you can change servers regardless of which world set you choose. So you don’t have to pay attention to which server you choose, but can simply play on one that still allows new players.
Not possible is moving to a full server or one that is currently undergoing maintenance. You may also not move to where you already have another character.
In addition to server names and server region, servers also have a world set – for example, Vanaheim Nu and Vanaheim Rho. These world sets are intended to merge some servers of the same world set later on. At the moment, many more servers are live than originally planned in order to get the long queues under control. When the player numbers have settled down, some of them will probably no longer be needed and less busy servers will be merged into one.
Can you also change the region?
There was some confusion as to whether the character transfer also works between regions – i.e. whether you can switch from the EU to a US server, for example. According to a forum reply from a support staff member, you can play in any region, but you have to create a new character to do so. The switch will not work between regions.
How many free server changes are there?
We checked with Amazon to see how many times you can have your character moved for free and if the offer applies to all your available characters. We also asked whether there would be other options later on to change the server for a fee. In the meantime, there is an answer to this: In all likelihood, you will only be allowed to change servers once for free
Later, the necessary tokens will be available in the shop – but for a fee. Amazon is leaving a small loophole open: They are closely monitoring the server situation to see if a second round of free tokens will be issued after all
