New World is overrun by fishing bots, but players find creative solutions

More and more bots are plaguing New World – but instead of engaging in PvP or harassing leveling players, they prefer to stand on the shore and fish.

Although the latest content update has just been released and the developers have promised a glorious future for the MMO in an extensive Q&A, there is once again a problem in New World.

The reason for the current trouble: this time, bots, i.e. characters that are not controlled by real people but automatically by scripts, are giving New World a headache. They are pursuing a pastime that actually stands for peace and tranquillity, and are thus causing chaos and discord: Fishing.

How much does the fish cost?

On Reddit ( messages are piling up) from players who have noticed an extreme increase in active bots on their server in recent days. The (user zgrizz) even created a new character to check how the situation is for newcomers – the result: the whole starting area was full of bots.

These bots devote themselves with full passion to fishing. What sounds harmless at first (unless you’re a scale carrier) is increasingly turning into a full-blown problem for the economy. As is well known, the economy in New World is run purely by players and is therefore based on the well-known supply-and-demand principle.

Pricing is therefore also reacting to this development. In the meantime, the prices for honestly caught fish and other crafting materials are plummeting, and many players hardly see any point in doing any crafting at all if bots are stealing all their resources and ruining the prices.

The fact that bots sometimes cause mischief and strong price fluctuations is not just a New World problem. Other MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft also suffer from bot problems. As recently as 2020, Blizzard triggered massive criticism among players with a new anti-bot measure:

Bots don’t get banned, players get creative

Normally, one should be able to assume that reported bots will be summarily banned by the GMs. But that does not seem to be the case at the moment. The Reddit user (Rheality) _ describes that he reported a clearly recognisable bot – and that ten days later he could still see it at work.

In the (official forum) people also complain about the passivity of the developers. So what do you do when the authorities let you down? You take action yourself! And it didn’t take long for bot hunting to become a lively pastime in New World.

Two particularly popular methods of stopping bots: Pull aggro from a nearby mob and lure it to the bot to be attacked. Or you can join forces with other players and form a U-shaped wall around the bot. Then you can watch in peace as the bot’s scripts are completely overwhelmed by this unforeseen obstacle.
