Be careful who you give gold to in the MMO: Reports of players being hit by scams are piling up.
Not even all the initial server problems have been solved yet, but the first stories about scams in New World are already surfacing. Most affected are players who send money to company leaders. Unfortunately, the systems in the MMO can currently be exploited to make off with donated gold.
One such case was reported by Reddit user Paradoggs, who was on the Heracleion server. A guild leader has absconded with a huge amount of gold and can no longer be found.
What actually happened there?
After a lost war, said guild leader of a syndicate company asked for donations from members so he could buy a settlement. More than 200 people reportedly donated, raising about 60,000 gold – a hefty sum in New World. But the person simply made off with the money, along with a few friends.
Did we just have the first huge drama in New World? from newworldgame
How can something like this happen? New World’s systems currently allow you to transfer gold to another character in your possession who is on a different server. Since you can also change factions with impunity, tracking is practically impossible, at least for normal players.
Many people complain about this in the comments. Some even prefer to do without the war aspects of New World completely because they are worried about cheating. Some hope that such actions will at least lead to account bans.
Others, on the other hand, enjoy it because they feel reminded of dramas from Eve Online. TheWinteredWolf, for example, writes:
Yes, I’m taking a break from Eve Online right now, but this reminds me 100 percent of it. Which I think is great. I was hoping New World would develop its own drama similar to Eve Online. Not that I like people being cheated on, but in Eve it’s stories like this that start as drama, develop into rivalry and eventually player content in the form of months-long wars.
In short, be angry, recruit, train, organise and knock the bastard and his friends out every time you see them. Love it!”
However, commenters point out that cheaters can be tracked in Eve Online and can easily go underground in New World at the moment. Even if they don’t, the PvP marker can easily be disabled, then the player can’t be attacked at all. In addition, the stolen gold cannot be “stolen back”.
Heracleion’s scam is not the only incident of this kind, in forums and on Reddit some players complain about similar experiences. It is not known whether the developers see this as a problem and are perhaps already working on technical solutions – we will keep you up to date.
