Intriguing indie game RE:CALL, where players explore characters’ memories, confirms its release date with a new trailer.
RE:CALL is an intriguing new indie game that gamers can check out on PC through Valve’s Steam storefront beginning January 17, 2023, as confirmed by its latest teaser trailer. RE:CALL is developed by maitan69 and published by Whitethorn Games, a company that specializes in publishing indie games like hot spring management game Onsen Master, a quirky co-op title that released earlier this year.
In RE:CALL, the game’s primary gimmick is that it lets players manipulate the memories of the player character, taking actions in the past to change the present. RE:CALL acts as a narrative-driven adventure/puzzle game, with players tasked with figuring out exactly how they must alter the past through the main character’s flashbacks to move the story in the present forward. During the course of RE:CALL, players will interact with 10 different characters with their own distinct personalities and motivations, some of whom are highlighted in the new release date teaser trailer. While players interact with these characters and solve the game’s puzzles, they will be working towards the main goal in RE:CALL, which to discover how the protagonist has acquired this strange power in the first place. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how it all goes down when the full game launches on January 17.
At the time of this writing, RE:CALL is only confirmed for release on PC. However, the game was playable through the ID@Xbox Winter Demo event, so maybe a console release could materialize at some point if there’s enough interest. There’s already decent buzz surrounding RE:CALL’s narrative, so it will be exciting to see if it lives up to the hype once its release date rolls around.
The concept of RE:CALL is somewhat reminiscent of the award-winning Japanese manga/anime series Erased. In Erased, the protagonist is able to essentially travel back in time to alter the present circumstances, not unlike the ability RE:CALL’s protagonist possesses. This gimmick of altering past events to shape the future has big potential in the gaming space for puzzle-solving and narrative developments, but it seems like it could be tricky to pull off. Fans can check out RE:CALL for themselves when the game launches next month to see if it does its intriguing premise justice.
There are many exciting indie games releasing in 2023 for fans to keep track of, and many fans may want to add RE:CALL to their lists. What’s been shown of RE:CALL so far looks impressive, and luckily indie game fans who missed out in its limited-time ID@Xbox demo don’t have to wait much longer to try it out for themselves.
