Young Valorant player Karel “Twisten” Asenbrener passes away on 6 June 2023, with the scene bidding farewell with touching messages.

The news of the passing of Karel “Twisten” Asenbrener sends the eSports scene into shock.

On 7 June, Team Vitality announced in a tear-jerking Twitter post that the French team’s young star player passed away on the night of 6 June.

The post was complemented by a commentary from the organisation highlighting the relevance of mental health and a link to a charity for young people in need.

According to Asenbrener’s coach Harry “Gorilla” Mepham, his protégé is said to have committed suicide.

VCT defeat as cause?

Karel already announced at the beginning of the year that he was seeking treatment. The reason for this was severe depression. Despite this announcement, the player recently showed motivation in an interview and said that he wanted to reach at least the top 3 of the league with his team.

But as his mother explained in a statement, it was not because of the scene or the defeat. “Twisten”, according to her, was a person with many lovers around him and thanked him for every second she got to be his mother. Additionally, many eSports organisations, including FNATIC and Cloud9, also spoke out and expressed their condolences to the bereaved families.

Who was Twisten?

The 19 year old eSportsman had been under contract with Team Vitality since November 2022 after a successful stint with BIG. He started his competitive career with the Czech team Kings of Sosnovka (now eSuba), where he enjoyed success until 2021 before moving to BIG.
