After the first addon The Burning Crusade found its way into WoW Classic in June 2021, Blizzard has now also announced Wrath of the Lich King for Classic.

Already in the run-up there were many speculations and hints about it, now it is officially confirmed: The second WoW add-on Wrath of the Lich King will be released for WoW Classic and will probably make many fans’ hearts sing.

The second expansion Wrath of the Lich King, originally released in 2008, is one of the most popular WoW addons and, together with The Burning Crusade, is representative of the “good old WoW times”. Now, exactly this second addon will be added to the Classic version of World of Warcraft, which has existed since 2019, so that you can experience it again as it was back then.

There is no concrete release date for WoW Classic: WotLK yet. So far, only 2022 has been set as the time frame.

What is Wrath of the Lich King about?

Since 2008 was a little while ago, we’ll give you a brief summary of the story surrounding the addon: It is the year 27. The new Lich King Arthas Menethil awakens after a year-long sleep and continues his campaign of revenge against the peoples of Azeroth.

To do so, he sends his Scourge, a horde of zombies, to invade Orgrimmar and Stormwind and wreak havoc. Of course, the leaders of the Horde and Alliance do not take this lying down. They beat back the Scourge and launch a counterattack that takes them to the home of the Lick King – it’s Northrend.

What to expect in the addon?

Now that you know what to expect story-wise, let’s take a quick look at the changes and innovations in the game. For the sake of clarity, we have packed the biggest ones into a bullet point list:

  • New maximum level: Level 80
  • New class: Death Knight
  • New profession: Inscriptionist
  • New area: Northrend
  • New Instances and Raid

As you may remember, you will not start with the Death Knight at level 1 as before, but will begin your journey at level 55. There are no prerequisites for this. As usual, you don’t have to buy the classic addon Wrath of the Lich King separately, but only need the WoW subscription of 13 euros per month to play it.

Presumably, the new addon, just like the other two Classic contents, will be released in several phases, so that you will not be able to play all contents of Wrath of the Lich King at the beginning. We don’t know any more details yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
